On Saturday night, Johnny Depp stopped for photos at Drink Las Vegas at Park MGM and, mid-pose, bit a leaf off the leafy backdrop behind him, chewed it, spat it out, and went back for a bigger second bite, per TMZ.
The step-and-repeat exists to give the camera a flat, brand-safe background. Thirty years of stars have treated it as exactly that, a background. Then a 63-year-old man looks at a step-and-repeat, decides it is the hors d'oeuvres, and starts eating the machine.
Context matters. This was not some random party. It was the after-party for his own rum, Three Hearts, at a four-day booze festival, the same weekend the first trailer for his new movie Day Drinker rolled out. The whole night is one activation circuit. Rum, movie, foliage. And the leaf-bite is the one bit no press release could have planned, which is exactly why it is worth more than everything else he did that night.
TMZ calls it "having a bit of fun with a few photographers." Page Six calls it a bizarre video. Either way, the clip is doing the work of a hundred planned appearances. The foliage wall goes back up next week. It will be slightly less leafy.
