Per Deadline, Aaron Sorkin logged back into Facebook for "The Social Reckoning," sent a friend request to Jesse Eisenberg, and got denied. The sequel opens October 9, with Jeremy Strong playing the Zuckerberg that Sorkin spent a three-day weekend trying to put back in front of the man who played him in 2010.

The pitch was a friend request. Not an email, not a meeting — a friend request, on the platform the movie is a sequel about, to the actor who played that platform's founder. Sorkin "sent it," and the denial arrived the way all denials arrive on Facebook: silently, with a little X.

A couple of pages from finishing the script, Sorkin ran into Eisenberg: "I'm gonna be sending you something in a couple of weeks." Eisenberg "smiled and nodded." In Sorkin's head, the nod was a signed contract. The inbox said no.

Then came the three-day weekend. Sorkin, by his own admission, has never written himself an outline in his life. This time he did — "arguments for why he should do it," headlined: "We already know you're gonna be great because you were already once." A monologue in which the role is a resume item.

"I knew what the studio was offering him to do it, but money does not motivate Jesse. It's infuriating," Sorkin told Entertainment Weekly. "If anything, money is a disincentive for him. He's very concerned about raising his kids with too much money." The offer is a number Sorkin knows, and the number is doing work as a disincentive. In 2026, the highest form of casting resistance is being turned off by your own paycheck.

Per Deadline's June report, Eisenberg "doesn't like being conflated with Mark Zuckerberg anymore." Sixteen years as the man who built the thing that now delivers the offer, and the film is about the platform's notification machinery. The friend request is the sequel's entire thesis, compressed into one screen.

Jeremy Strong got the part. The friend request is still in the tab, denied — a 2010 Zuckerberg, waiting in the Requests queue for a confirmation that never comes.

YOUR TURN: Is the little X the end of the pitch, or is it just the Requests tab being the Requests tab?
