Charlie and Martin Sheen are back playing father and son on TV for the first time in over a decade, headlining Happy Jack, a six-episode half-hour family comedy for AMC and AMC+ that starts production at the Warner Bros. studio where Friends was filmed in 2027, according to Deadline. Charlie plays Jack, "a bit of a lifelong ne'er-do-well," whose daughter has come home with a boyfriend, a former investment banker turned van life guru, who is the same age as he is.
Do the math. Martin is 86. Charlie is 68. The last time the pair played father and son together was FX's Anger Management in 2012. In between: a Wall Street reunion, an Oscar, and fifteen years of Charlie Sheen's news cycle being a single question mark. And the comeback format is a half-hour sitcom on the network that made Breaking Bad. The prestige channel is now the dad channel.
Then the writing credit. Jim Patterson and Matt Ross, the Two and a Half Men and The Ranch team, are writing, exec producing, and showrunning. That is not a creative risk, that is a legacy asset with a term sheet. The same machine that built the Chuck Lorre factory is being pointed at the two Sheens, and the order is for six episodes, not a season. A pilot that cannot be canceled, only retired.
And the pitch itself: a lifelong ne'er-do-well, two daughters, and a boyfriend the same age as his dad who quit the bank to sell you a van. Charlie, whose real-life press cycle has been "is he okay" since forever, gets to play a guy whose worst problem is his own family. The last time Charlie Sheen was in a frame with a dad it was Anger Management. This time the dad is the real one.
Meanwhile Martin is out selling a faith film to American theaters this year, per Deadline. That is the true Sheen endgame: the family name as a franchise, and the sitcom as the merch table.
YOUR TURN: What song would be the theme to a sitcom where the dad is 86 and the screw-up is 68?
