Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison revealed Friday that the merged Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery company will be called Skydance when the $110 billion deal closes Tuesday, writing on X that "Together, we are Skydance: a creative-first home for bold, quality storytelling." Ellison said the name was chosen so the Paramount and Warner Bros. brands can "remain in the spotlight" under the new corporate umbrella. via Deadline

"Together, we are Skydance" — a $110 billion media merger announced with the gravity of a boy band name reveal. For weeks the fans did the branding work for free, coming up with "WarnaMount" and "ParaBros," and history shows that when a name is handed to the audience before the official one, the audience always wins.

The official reasoning is a masterwork of negation: "We never wanted to diminish, alter or overshadow either." What that means is both century-old logos survive, but only as decorations on the nameplate of a company named after one man's production company. The umbrella protects the brands. The umbrella is the brand.

The third victim is the least discussed: Discovery, whose name has been in lights since 2008, simply ceases to exist. A century of culture is "equipped with a more powerful engine" in the statement, which is the phrase they use when the car is a museum and the engine is a V8.

YOUR TURN: What do you name a merger — the founder, the product, or the thing that disappears?
