According to Deadline, "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" is getting a re-release with new footage. The film is now the highest-grossing domestic movie of all time at $950.7 million and the third biggest of all time worldwide at $2.495 billion.
The re-release is not a second run, it is a box office strategy. The movie sits at $950.6 million domestic and the only number left on the chart worth touching is a billion. Variety says that record would probably be out of reach without the re-release, which is the entire business plan in one sentence.
Disney proved the template. Endgame's encore pulled in $86 million as a warm-up for Doomsday, with the bonus scenes metered by screen format like a loot drop, six minutes on the biggest screens and two everywhere else. Sony is now running the same play on a movie that has not even finished its theatrical run, and the fans are already calling it the DLC-ification of movies.
THR reports the extra footage includes a cut scene with Rosario Dawson's Claire Temple. A Daredevil character in a Spider-Man re-release tells you exactly what extra content means now. It is a favor between two studios, repackaged as a reward for paying to see the same movie twice.
YOUR TURN: are you paying $16 for two minutes of Rosario Dawson?
