Artist Sabine Tautou strapped a stripped, plastic-wrapped man to the Hollywood Sign on Friday morning for a 25-minute performance titled "Public Figure, 2026," before police cited her for trespassing. According to the NY Post, Tautou bills herself as a "notorious fetish professional and fantasy curator."
The performance is a man wrapped in plastic on a hillside. The press release is the actual artwork. "A compelling physical and ideological juxtaposition." "A monument to celebrity." This is what a dominatrix who bills $10,000 a day sounds like when her lawyer hands out the statement. The man has no name, no face, and no say, and the release calls him "anonymous and vulnerable" like it's a feature.
Here's the irony doing the heavy lifting. The piece is called Public Figure. The Hollywood Sign is a monument to fame, to people who get wrapped in plastic by tabloids and never come back clean. So Tautou took the most public figure in the room, an anonymous sub, and mummified him to the one sign that means you can become anyone here. The juxtaposition, as the release says, is physical and ideological. The release is the joke. The man is the prop.
And the whole thing is content. Twenty-five minutes on a hillside, a trespass citation, and a photo op that now out-sells the actual sign. NY Post caught her doing a similar wrap-and-douse on a Brooklyn lamppost back in July. The mummified guy wasn't asked if he had fun. The only question is whether the wrap photo hits.
