Antonio Banderas has joined Nicolas Cage in season 5 of HBO's "True Detective," set in Jamaica Bay, New York, with production set to start in 2027, per Deadline. Cage, who announced his own involvement last week at New York Comic-Con, will play Henry Logan. Banderas plays Rai Garcia. Issa López writes, directs, and runs the season.
First the geography, because the geography is the joke. Season one was the Louisiana bayou. Season two was the Central Coast of California. Season three was the Ozarks. Season four was the ice of Alaska. Season five is a bay on the east side of New York City, famous for exactly one thing, which is that it is where the city puts the stuff it does not want to look at anymore. "True Detective," the show that has spent a decade shining a flashlight in the ugliest rooms of the American house, has picked a sewage outfall for its next soul. The slow-motion road trip to the bottom of the sea continues, one season at a time.
The casting follows the same logic. Cage and Banderas are two actors whose entire careers amount to a long, unbroken act of "one more thing that's a little bit too much," and the only difference between them is which year they peaked. HBO handed them a bay, a boat, and a showrunner with a track record of pointing cameras at dark water. This is not a mismatch. It is a direction.
The announcement method deserves a paragraph of its own. Cage revealed his role himself at a comic-con panel, before his agent could, and added, "That's OK that I'm the first to announce that, right?" He said it at the same panel where, per Deadline, he said he's "probably not going to be working with that studio again" after refusing to sign an AI waiver for the cancelled "Spider-Noir." So the whole story in one breath: Cage burns a bridge with one of the largest streaming studios over a piece of paper about AI, and a week later HBO is buying his boat.
López has promised "important connections" between everything that happened in Alaska and what happens out of the bay, which sounds like a map. Watch for it.
YOUR TURN: If the dark American soul keeps moving toward the water, what happens in season 6, under it?
