Greta Gerwig's Narnia: The Magician's Nephew trailer pulled more than 481 million views in its first week, more than the first week trailers for Barbie and Wonka, Deadline reports after Netflix's earnings call.

The mechanism is the trailer count. Netflix needed a number for the transcript and found one that is not box office. 481.3 million views in seven days, more than Gerwig's own Barbie at 240 million and Wonka at 237.2 million, and the streamer that spent a decade refusing to say how many people watched anything is now counting YouTube plays like ticket stubs.

The stack behind the number is the real story. The trailer debuted at an IMAX sneak peek in New York, ran paid media across TikTok, Reddit, Meta, X, Snap, Pinterest, and YouTube, bought linear spots around Sunday NFL, and landed the first Led Zeppelin "Stairway to Heaven" sync in band history. Jimmy Page called Gerwig a powerhouse in the world of cinema, and that quote was worth more than the trailer. Four separate news hooks out of one 90 second file.

The number does not mean what the chart implies. A trailer view is a cursor, not a body. 481 million people are not 481 million bodies in a theater on February 12, and the 49 day exclusive window is doing a lot of work in the background of that sentence. But that is the point of the new era. Ship the number first and the movie second, and if the movie underdelivers, the number is already on the transcript.

YOUR TURN: Should trailer views ever sit next to box office numbers, or is that a different sport in the same jersey?
