At his Saturday show in Philadelphia, Ed Sheeran told 50,000 people at Lincoln Financial Field that the past week was one of the worst of his life. The show went on after several support acts pulled out of the tour, and Sheeran called it the best show of my life, per IBTimes.
The apology is the opening act. That is the new tour structure. Ten minutes of crisis reading before the setlist, stadium in the dark, spotlight on the one man left. I really did not know whether I would get on stage again lands in a 50,000-seat arena the way it was written for a 50,000-seat arena. It was written for one. Somebody has a job, and the job is making sure the worst week of your life is also the best show.
The PR math is clean. The removal was the promoter's decision, which is the music industry's version of the building fired the bullet. A donation goes out, a billionaire gets asked to match it, the billionaire says he is building bridges, and the stadium gets a story. The man who nearly quit, the fans who kept him. 50,000 people who did not abandon him is the only statistic the tour is going to cite. The walkouts did not hurt. The walkouts were pre-show content.
Here is the part. It worked. The tears went out to a stadium with a sound system, and the sound system was the point. Best show of my life is a line that can only be said to 50,000 people at once, because 50,000 witnesses is a number you cannot argue with.
