According to E!, David Thewlis, 62, says he is "sick of talking about" returning to Harry Potter, and the interview in which he said so is making the rounds again ahead of the HBO reboot. The series is in production and expected in 2027.
The Return Question is the reboot's real content. "So, are you coming back?" gets asked of every original cast member at every interview, and every refusal becomes a headline: star is "sick of being asked about returning." The refusal is the press release. The actor says no, and the no gets distributed to every outlet on earth. The 2027 show is just the sequel to the 2025 question.
Thewlis played Lupin from 2004 to 2010. He is 62 now. The machine does not care. The machine needs the question, because the question is the toll booth. Every nostalgia tax is collected at the same red carpet, by the same interviewer, with the same smile. "I feel like I'd be far too old to play my original character" is the only answer the press will ever quote, and it is a quote the franchise can run forever, in any year, against any actor.
Meanwhile John Lithgow, 80, said yes to Dumbledore and confirmed he will be "about 87 at the wrap party." That is not casting, that is a life commitment. "Dumbledore is kind of the nuclear weapon," he said, and only goes off very, very occasionally. A man who has prebooked his 87th birthday into a wrap party is doing more for the franchise, for free, than any cameo could.
The Return Question never sleeps. It just waits for the next interview.
