On Friday, JYP Entertainment told Billboard that Stray Kids had submitted nothing to the 2027 Grammy Awards, joining the boycott BTS announced in July over the Recording Academy's new Best Asian Pop Music Performance category.
The mechanism is the locked room. The Gilded Hall added a door to the awards show and hung a sign that reads like a zip code. Two of the biggest music acts on the planet looked at the new room and chose the parking lot.
The defense was the listening tour. The Academy convened a virtual call with 80-plus artists and executives from the Asian music industry, heard frank feedback, and kept the category. Per BBC, the "loudest feedback" came from people who "were enthusiastic supporters of the category." Survey method: poll your own fans, call it consensus. Billboard's Pro desk has the full "we heard you" statement. "It was never about division, but about expansion," says the horn, right after the two biggest bands in the room walked out.
The math doesn't work either. The Gilded Hall has 15,000 voters and a new regional shelf. The boycotters, between them, have topped the Billboard 200 in the past year, and one of those albums sat at No. 1 for three straight weeks, a chart position that does not need a gold horn to validate it. When your biggest guests stop showing up, the trophy does not glow a little brighter. It just looks like inventory.
YOUR TURN: Is the new category a locked door or a new front porch, and does your answer depend on who holds the key?
