According to NY Post, Aurora James, the designer of AOC's 2021 "Tax The Rich" Met Gala dress, has been sued for $1,082,965.28 over unpaid bills from her February charity gala at Paramount Studios. Her event producer, The Gathery, ran the party three years straight, fronted the vendor costs, and says James's nonprofit kept them working while knowing it could not pay.
The irony is doing all the talking. The dress said TAX THE RICH. The invoice says DON'T PAY YOUR VENDORS. The Gathery ran this gala in 2024 and 2025 with no problems. Then the payments stopped in November 2025, and by February the room at Paramount was full of A-listers, per Fox News, Meghan walking in, Tina Knowles getting a gong, while a seven-figure invoice rotted in a drawer.
The mechanism is the charity gala, where rich people pay other rich people to stand in a room with them, and somebody has to bill for the difference. The difference here is $777,871.84 in principal. The defense, through a spokeswoman, is that the lawsuit is "a publicity stunt, plain and simple." Sure. The tab doesn't say stunt.
The kicker is that this isn't even a new habit. The Post's own 2021 reporting found 15 tax warrants on her company since 2015. The dress was supposed to be the statement. It turned out to be the subpoena.
