Apple TV+ dropped "Matchbox The Movie" today, a two-hour John Cena and Jessica Biel action comedy "inspired by the iconic Mattel toys," according to 9to5Mac. The cast walked the New York red carpet for the world premiere on October 5.
The whole deal fits in one word: inspired. That is not a synopsis, that is a business plan. A two-hour globe-trotting CIA thriller whose only tie to the source material is a toy logo.
The machine did the heavy lifting. Apple's action catalog keeps churning. "The Gorge," "Wolfs," "Ghosted," "The Family Plan," "Mayday," and now Cenemax, the small-town edition. An undercover agent returns home, drags his childhood friends into a frantic international pursuit, saves the world. The cast, Arturo Castro, Sam Richardson, Corey Stoll, Teyonah Parris, stacks around the one man in Hollywood whose face is the brand.
That is the toy aisle's answer to Transformers. Except the cars never have to become robots. They just have to be in the shot.
YOUR TURN: Movie, or commercial?
