Sean "Diddy" Combs was moved this morning from FCI Fort Dix in New Jersey to FCI Allenwood, a low-security federal prison in Pennsylvania, per TMZ. The move lands six days after his head injury and a string of phone violations and fights.

The transfer is arithmetic. Problem inmates get moved to harder security. Diddy got the same security level, in a building with a quarter of the population. Fort Dix has 4,000 inmates. Allenwood has 1,000. That is not the math of a disciplinary move, that is the math of a protection detail. The Bureau of Prisons will not confirm any of it, because the Bureau of Prisons confirms nothing. The only reason on offer is "safety and security," the same sentence stapled under the head injury last week. It is a form. The form is the story.

Context is the suite. The NY Daily News ran the overflow report: a smuggled phone, massages, fine alcohol, fine food, and fan mail so heavy his cellmates were storing it in their own cells. The transfer is a change of address, not a change of addresses. VIP treatment is a portable appliance. You cannot sanction it, and apparently you cannot reassign it either. He lost 41 days of good time credit and 400 days of commissary for the violations, and still got the smaller building.

We are calling Allenwood the Quiet Wing. A thousand-person facility where the guards can, per the people doing the math, keep an eye on the most famous inmate in the federal system. Fifty months, and it is starting to feel less like a sentence and more like a residential stay with house rules.

YOUR TURN: Four thousand inmates to one thousand. Is that a transfer, or an upgrade?
