Anne Hathaway posted her first-ever Letterboxd review: five stars on Tom Cruise's Digger, the Alejandro G. Iñárritu film now projected to cost Warner Bros. up to $200 million. "Loved this brilliant film," she wrote. "It's smart, trippy, aggressive, funny, and ambitious. Worth the time to see it and decide for yourself." She added: "As for me? 10/10." Hathaway is next set to co-star with Cruise in the Days of Thunder sequel.

A career's first Letterboxd review does not open with an art-house gem or a childhood favorite. It opens on a movie projected to lose its studio $200M. That is not a review, that is a loyalty test: the future co-star, the future Days of Thunder partner, handing five stars to a bomb in public, with a "10/10" stapled on for good measure. Star ratings were always the social currency of Letterboxd. Hathaway just turned hers into a press release.

The mechanism is simple: when a movie cannot be saved at the box office, save it in the review card. "Worth the time to see it and decide for yourself" is what you say when the deciding already happened and the number is already in. The review card is the new premiere — cheaper than a screening, and no ticket stubs can refute it.

Cruise's franchise has always run on faith, and now the faith has an app. A film that needed $350M to break even and grossed $20M gets a five-star review from the woman set to star in his next one, and somewhere at Warner Bros. a spreadsheet quietly adds a new column: the cost of a 10/10.

YOUR TURN: What does a 10/10 from a future co-star buy that a trailer cannot?
