According to GeekTyrant, YouTuber Gossip Goblin, aka Zack London, dropped a trailer for "Gods Don't Give Gifts," a 104-minute AI-generated sci-fi horror film. It opens in limited theaters December 4, and the team has announced it will campaign for a Best Animated Feature Oscar nomination.
The PR line is that "human voice actors provided the performances and human creators remain central to the filmmaking process," which is the way of saying the machine did the acting and the humans did the paperwork. The shorts the movie expands on have more than a billion views. That is the entire track record. A Venice market preview is already on the resume, the MPA handed it an R rating, and billboards go up in November.
The campaign is the real story. The trailer runs in theaters Friday, lobby posters are in the works, and Fable CEO Edward Saatchi says they will screen the film for Academy voters and run "a traditional Oscar campaign." That's the phrase. A traditional Oscar campaign, for a movie a YouTuber made on his channel. The grassroots voter drive has a billboard budget.
Saatchi's quote is the line of the year. He says the film "could be this generation's Toy Story" and calls it "objectively a landmark, historic moment in animation." The bar for landmark is now a trailer. The bar for historic is an R rating.
YOUR TURN: Is the Oscar campaign a statement about AI, or is it the AI that is the statement?
