According to E! News, Anne Hathaway, who delivered five films in 2026, posted an Instagram video on October 2 in which she vanishes in a cloud of animated smoke, followed by fake newspaper headlines reading "Anne Hathaway has disappeared" and "Anne Hathaway has simply evaporated."
The vanishing is content. She told ET on September 21 that "on the 3rd of October I'm going to, like, disappear in a cloud of smoke, and you're not going to see me until you have to." So the absence gets a trailer, a release date, and a content slot, and when October 3 arrives the event that shows up is a one-minute-51-second Instagram video in which the star explains that she is about to stop showing up. You are not going to see her until you have to. The audience is still on her schedule.
Run the math: Mother Mary, The Devil Wears Prada 2, The Odyssey, The End of Oak Street, Verity. Five pictures, one year, a year that ends not in absence but in a video with a smoke budget. The vanishing is the sixth title. The video closes with "Thank you all for your support... what an incredible, unforgettable year" — the farewell is a thank-you post, the thank-you post is engagement, and the engagement is the return preview.
Even the news cycle got the memo. The headlines inside the video are fake, and every outlet is reporting them as real. "Anne Hathaway has disappeared" was a graphic the PR team made, and it still became a news event. Nobody checks the dateline on a cloud.
YOUR TURN: If the vanishing is scheduled, what is the name of the day she actually misses it?
