With the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show airing tonight, Miranda Kerr has confirmed she turned down the brand's invitation to return, posting on the 20th anniversary of her first show that she chose to "cherish this chapter as it was," per Us Magazine. The brand's reply to the post was a heart and the words "Always an Angel to us."
The most expensive two words in fashion are "we miss you." A brand that turned its former models into a logo couldn't turn this one back, so Kerr did the math and chose the legend over the nostalgia act. Come back and you're a throwback special. Stay gone and you're the reason the show existed. The royalty check on absence is the bigger one, and she has been cashing it since her last runway walk for Moschino in 2017.
"Always an Angel to us" is what a company says when the coffee is at its own headquarters. The show airs tonight without her, which is the proof: the show is the product now, the angels are the packaging. Just Jared already counted the old Angels who weren't asked back, and the list reads like a reunion no one scheduled.
Kerr's exit is the only exit strategy that works: leave while the brand still needs you. Weeks before the anniversary post she was back on a runway for Stella McCartney in Paris, nine years after the last one, in a dress with shoulder pads that said another label got the call. The face was never the point. She knew that on Saturday.
YOUR TURN: Was the no the best look Kerr ever did for the brand, or is the invoice still coming?
