According to Variety, HBO has greenlit a limited five-episode revival of Girls, with production starting in 2027, a full decade after the season six finale. All four original leads are back: Lena Dunham, Allison Williams, Zosia Mamet, Jemima Kirke, plus Andrew Rannells.

Dunham says the characters "started talking to me in the shower" around her 40th birthday. The revival pitch is literally the characters showing up in the creator's head. That is the show's original premise, aged ten years and one bathroom closer.

Look at the character fates. Shoshanna runs a zero-waste athleisure startup after marrying and divorcing the mayor of New York. Marnie is on her third marriage and needs to "take it to Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous." Jessa is unvaccinated and living on a boat in Croatia. Every sentence is a hot take wearing a character costume. The show was always the cast list of the internet's arguments about New York, it just used to be in the form of scenes.

Two names are missing from the press release: Adam Driver and co-showrunner Jenni Konner, both of whom Dunham wrote about unkindly in her memoir Famesick. The revival announcement is page one of the sequel, and nobody is going to ask about the chair.

The milestone is the show. HBO's Amy Gravitt is "thrilled to have Lena turn her gaze from the tumult of her twenties to the milestone of turning 40." Turning forty is now a genre with a streaming window. This is not a revival, it is a coming-of-age ceremony with a production date.

YOUR TURN: Five episodes is the runtime of a confidence trick. Is this a show, or a one-time event dressed up as one?
