During her SNL hosting run last night, Taylor Swift walked out on Dakota Johnson mid-monologue, then returned for the goodnights with a birthday cake, as Page Six caught on its own photos.

Johnson introduces her as "my literal therapist." Swift then does a bit where Johnson shows up at her house once a week with an empty bottle of wine, flops on the couch, and gets sent home by security on a Pedialyte. The monologue turns into a two-woman commercial for Verity and the string of musician boyfriends who keep finding their way into her DMs.

This is the celebrity favor economy, and it is the only economy left. Dakota appeared in Swift's "Patient Zero" video, so Swift repays her on live television in front of five million people, with a cake, on schedule. Deadline calls it payback. Payback with a camera crew is just an invoice with better lighting. Every "surprise" appearance is a line item and the ledger never zeroes out.

The friendship is real, probably. That is the problem. Real friendships do not need to be promoted into $62 million movies, but they make excellent B-roll. Swift whoops when Cleveland is mentioned. She is not a fan in the audience, she is a co-marketer with good taste.

YOUR TURN: Cameo: gift or line item? Make your case, the ledger is open.
