Brian May took to Instagram to deny that he said Queen will never tour again, calling Rolling Stone's "Brian May Says Queen Won't Tour Again" headline a "misinterpretation" of his interview, per the Daily Express, and adding "I made a personal decision last year to take a break from touring. I could never say never." The denial lands two days after Rolling Stone ran the headline, the day a Queen concert film from 1986 opens in UK cinemas, and the day before his own brand of gin hits shelves on Thursday.

The out-of-context quote machine ran its full cycle in 48 hours: an interview, a headline, a screenshot of the man being misquoted, and a correction. May said 50 years is enough, and the band died in print before the weekend. The correction is a screenshot of himself being misquoted, which is the only form of correction this industry accepts. The original headline is still up, still doing its search work, still selling the gin.

The gin matters more than the correction. The Red Special, named for his signature guitar, lands in UK shops on Thursday, and there is not one sentence in the denial post about it. There is not one sentence about the concert film opening today. The denial is pure damage control, which means the denial is part of the marketing calendar. When the only news a band in its final chapter has is a liquor listing, the obituary is the ad.

As for what "I could never say never" means in PR: never is not for sale, but maybe is licensed. Maybe a reunion for a film theme. Maybe an anniversary special. Maybe a 2028 tour in which two men in their late seventies are booked at museum-exhibit rates. The machine does not close files, it moves them to the archive.

YOUR TURN: If "never" is off the table, is a Queen reunion a product decision now, and whose spreadsheet is it sitting on?
