According to E! News, Ben Affleck addressed David Fincher's 12-year-old claim that he shut down the Gone Girl shoot over a Yankees hat, calling the director a "lying motherf---er" on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast.

For twelve years the hat story was Fincher's favorite war anecdote. On the official Gone Girl Blu-ray commentary he said the airport scene shut down for several days because Affleck refused to wear a Yankees cap. In Affleck's telling, the entire incident was all 20 minutes of wardrobe talk. And it wasn't a Red Sox thing. A Yankees cap in the scene would have been "a big distraction," and he wanted the audience to stay inside the story. Fincher, per Affleck, said, "No, no, no, it's gotta be the Yankees hat." The compromise was a Mets cap, which Affleck has called "very Swiss" since 2014, when he described the whole affair as "a one-man riot against the Yankees."

The PR machine here is the Blu-ray itself. The commentary track is a marketing asset, and a director claiming his lead stalled production is exactly the behind-the-scenes drama that sells the 4K remaster. A 20-minute conversation becomes "several days," the story runs a decade, and nobody at the studio corrects it, because the myth is the merchandise. Now the myth's subject corrected it on a podcast, using E!'s exact spelling of the expletive.

The kicker is the relationship. "I love him, we're friends, I adore him," Affleck said, adding that Fincher probably thought, "Ah, I'll make Ben suffer about this for years." He did. Twelve years of it. The suffering had a Mets cap on it, and it ended with one expletive and a compliment. That is the full history of Hollywood conflict resolution. The story runs a decade, the truth takes one podcast, and both men get to keep their careers.

YOUR TURN: "All 20 minutes, David." How many of your workplace disputes are actually a hat, and who is going to say it out loud in twelve years?
