According to Variety, a blue-checked fan account with a million followers posted an AI-generated selfie of Mia Goth wearing a shirt that reads "MY EX IS MY BIGGEST FAN," two days after her divorce filing from Shia LaBeouf became public. Meta says the account was "removed for impersonating a public figure."

The blue check used to mean "this is the real one." Now it means "this account has enough followers to get a badge." Mia Goth has never had a social media account. The internet found that vacuum and solved it: a bot that posts fake photos of you, verified.

The shirt is the real story. A fan account is, by definition, her ex's biggest fan, so the message was technically accurate. The post was so perfectly on point that outlets reported it as if she had actually posed in the shirt. OK! led with "Mia Goth Poses in 'My Ex Is My Biggest Fan' Shirt" without checking that the photo did not exist, and People called it a "cheeky shirt message."

Meta's wording does the heavy lifting. "Removed for impersonating a public figure." Read it again: the crime was not that a real person's face got printed onto a fabricated photo. The crime was that the account was not licensed. Meta does not ban AI images of real people, it labels them. The label is doing the work the ban should be doing.

Her rep called it "incomprehensible" that Instagram prioritized "the spread of a fabricated, manipulated image over protecting a public figure's likeness." That is the word in a PR statement for "we are furious, but we still have a contract with you."

YOUR TURN: The blue check is no longer a stamp of authenticity, it is a popularity contest. If the fake you has a million followers, is it still a fake?
