According to Deadline, Netflix has put a two-season straight-to-series order on The Apology, an A24 thriller drama starring Gwyneth Paltrow in her first lead TV role. Thomas Vinterberg, of Another Round, directs. In the show, a couple whose son was murdered 18 years ago gets a confession from a stranger who may get a reduced sentence, so they take matters into their own hands.
The title is the whole press release. The Goop queen's first lead TV role is called The Apology, and the person apologizing is a stranger who confesses to a murder and might get a reduced sentence for it. Paltrow's character is the parent who decides the justice system's apology track is too slow and walks. Variety ran the same word order: first lead role, A24, Netflix. The package did the talking.
The timing is the funnier part. Netflix spent last week laying off about a thousand people and swapping its content queen for a Disney guy, and this weekend the streamer answers its own crisis with a preemptive two-season buy of an A-list package. The purge and the order are the same reflex: the machine has to purchase its own taste to believe it still has some.
Apothecary Gwyn goes from green juice to a cold case, a bigger tonal leap than the show's plot lands in two seasons. Vinterberg's U.S. TV debut gets to direct a mother who skips the apology pipeline entirely. Everyone in this deal is apologizing to someone. The show is the only part that isn't.
YOUR TURN: Two seasons, a first TV lead, and a title that is the entire press release. Comeback or rebrand, pick one before the pilot airs.
