According to TMZ, Donnie Wahlberg's private jet slid off the runway at Las Vegas Harry Reid International Airport on Sunday morning after failing to become airborne and hit the perimeter fence. Wahlberg posted a video to Instagram where he got choked up, pointing at a construction site and explaining that the plane avoided trucks, dumpsters, and heavy equipment. "I'm not sure how many fences we avoided, but we didn't avoid the last one." He said the pilots "saved our lives" and that "God covered us." No injuries were reported, and officials say the incident is under investigation. Wahlberg was in Vegas finishing the final show of New Kids on the Block's The Right Stuff residency.
A jet that would not get airborne, hit a fence, and nearly hit a construction site. And the man on it did the only thing a 55 year old Hollywood guy could do, which is pick up a camera. The near miss is already on the content calendar.
Credit where credit is due, he said the pilots saved their lives, and he is right. The video proves it. The pilots got about four seconds of screen time and the fence got the rest. A plane that ran out of runway is the only aviation news you can vlog, and he did not waste his chance.
The timing is the real story. Saturday night, show 40 of 40 for New Kids on the Block. Sunday morning, the fence. Sunday afternoon, a video where he gets emotional about God and trucks. That is not bad luck. That is a work ethic.
The fence took a private jet to the face and has no spokesperson, no Instagram, and no comeback tour. We will say it for the fence. The fence is fine. The fence is always fine. Nobody thanks the fence.
YOUR TURN: You get 30 seconds on camera to explain why you are alive. What is your first line?
