According to Variety, Taylor Swift has reached 100 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, the most by any solo artist, with "The Life of a Showgirl" at the top for a 14th straight week. The Beatles' "Rubber Soul" re-entered at No. 4, its first top 10 appearance since April 1966, on the strength of a new box set.
One hundred weeks. Elvis managed 67, Garth Brooks 52, and the Beatles as a band sit at 132. The number is real, the record is real, and the machine behind it is real too: the week that makes it 100 runs on "The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore," an extended edition with four new tracks that counts as the same album. A record that lasts is a record that ships.
The top 10 agrees. Four of the ten are reissues or deluxe cuts, and a 1965 album is back in the top 10 on the strength of a $229 box set. Drake jumped from No. 116 to No. 2 after adding four new tracks. The chart is not ranking new music anymore. It is ranking editions.
The Beatles math says Swift can pass 132 with two or three more original albums. Note the word doing the work in that sentence. The museum now has 100 weeks of inventory, and the gift shop restocks weekly.
YOUR TURN: If the edition counts toward the record, does the record count toward the music?
