John Wilson has been filming inside Harry Styles' Together, Together residency at Madison Square Garden since August, and the documentary is going to Universal. According to Variety, Universal Pictures Content Group owns the global rights and is pushing a theatrical release.

Let's start with the machinery. Universal Pictures Content Group is producing a concert film alongside Peanut World Pictures and the artist himself. That is the movie studio that buys the rights to your Tuesday night so your Tuesday night becomes their Q3. The release calls it the largest single-engagement residency in MSG history, which is the line that made the lawyers smile. Largest single engagement, largest single invoice.

Then there's the cameraman. John Wilson has been trailing the star with a big lens since August, and fan photos of the operation went viral, which is the actual press release. No embargo needed. The tour is the trailer. The guy with the camera is the brand. The documentary is just paperwork catching up to a shot everyone already saw.

Call it The Residual: the idea that a live show is not a show, it is a content pipeline with a ticket price. First the setlist, then the brand deals, then the photo ops, and finally the studio that owns the global rights to all of it. The Billie Eilish and James Cameron precedent says the water is warm. The water is also now owned by a studio.

Harry gets a documentary. Universal gets a release window. Madison Square Garden gets a plaque. The only one who doesn't get a cut is the part of the audience that wasn't holding up a phone.

YOUR TURN: Is it a concert film when the concert was filmed as a studio deliverable from the first show?
