Paul Bettany says he and Johnny Depp had not spoken in years when their 2013 text messages were read into the record at Depp's 2020 defamation trial. According to Variety, he is speaking up now, saying he was being painted as a close friend of someone he had not talked to in years.

First, the machinery. A defamation trial in 2020. A text thread from 2013. A friendship that had been dead for years. That is not a friendship, that is a filing cabinet. The court reading old texts is a lawyer reading an old lease: for what it establishes, not for what it once meant.

Then there's The Drowning Test, the nickname the tabloids earned the exchange. A chat between two men who had not spoken in years, read out loud in court, and a third party who was not even in the room at the time gets hauled into the record by one line of text. That is the legal version of the group chat you never left but got pulled back into.

Bettany says he stayed quiet at the time because people know me, and that the text-message bit was the most odd part of the trial. Fair enough. There is nothing odder than being a character witness for a friendship that is already dead. The texts did not prove a bond. They proved an inbox.

His silence was its own statement, and the PR machine did the rest, turning a dead chat into years of headlines. Now the statement lands six years late, in the form of an interview. The machine works. It just runs on a delay.

YOUR TURN: If you have not spoken in years, does a text from that friendship still prove the friendship, or does it just prove where your phone was?
