According to E!, Ben Affleck revealed in a Variety cover profile that he got banned from Instagram twice for impersonating himself, and that the account, which had six followers, all family, was "just an excuse" for him to look at his kids' social media.

The most convincing Ben Affleck account on the internet is the real one, and Instagram banned it twice. That is the joke, and that is the whole story. A 54-year-old A-lister with the follower count of a local bakery's grand opening, flagged by an impersonation bot that, at this point, makes more sense than the alternative. Somewhere, a piece of code looked at a perfectly genuine Ben Affleck and said no, you are not Ben Affleck, and was technically correct.

He even did the math on it. Jennifer Lopez and Jennifer Garner, he pointed out, do "real work" cultivating their social identities, "accruing value in those spaces." "I couldn't do it. What am I going to do, unbox something?" Right. The unboxing is a job, and he is looking at it like a man asked to reshoot the car commercial after retiring. The answer is no. The ban was a gift. It ended the paperwork.

The platform is the impressive part, not the man. In 2026 the real Affleck is a licensed brand, Dunkin' commercials, a cigarette meme, a daughter who calls him "the beleaguered man." The six-follower account was the only version of him that never had to say anything, and the platform's own immune system deleted it. The purest thing on the internet, removed for impersonation.

YOUR TURN: Six followers, all family. Which is worse, getting banned twice, or having your kids be your entire fanbase?
