According to Variety, Charli XCX will appear in Martin Scorsese's upcoming gothic psychological drama What Happens at Night, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence and is an Apple and StudioCanal production with no release date yet.

Here is the part nobody should have missed. The cover of Charli's forthcoming album Music, Fashion, Film literally cast the trinity: John Cale for music, Marc Jacobs for fashion, and Martin Scorsese for film, all of them standing deadpan in a stark kitchen. Cale says that before he knew it he was on a plane, in some "random kitchen," which is how you know the cover shoot was never really a cover shoot. The album cover was a casting call, and the cameo is the contract.

The film itself: an American married couple travels to a small European town to adopt a baby, and the story becomes about the fight to claim that child, while everyone learns less about themselves. No scene description, no explanation of what Charli does. A Scorsese cameo is a Scorsese cameo. You do not ask what the statue is doing.

The PR ladder has no elevator. A deadpan cover with three icons, the album feature, a tracklist that includes a David Cronenberg collaboration, and now a cameo in a DiCaprio-Lawrence Scorsese film. That is not a career arc, that is a calendar. By the time the record drops, the name is stapled to every room in the industry.

YOUR TURN: is this a cameo, or is this the main character arc?
