*Shane Gillis hosted "Saturday Night Live" for the third time Friday night and closed his opening monologue with a Hitler hairline bit, which Variety says got few laughs and ended early.

The headline did the work: "bombs (again)." That parenthetical is the whole business model. Hired in 2019, fired five days later when an old podcast clip resurfaced, then handed three hosting gigs because Lorne Michaels has been paying off that guilt on camera ever since. Every failure in that list is a free press release, and nobody drafted a single one.

The Hitler line was a joke the room could not laugh at but every outlet had to quote. The quote is the clip, the clip is the ad, and the bombed monologue is a pinata with headlines as the candy. By Sunday he had already broken character in a Dr. Seuss sketch to apologize for an F-bomb, because one bomb a night does not buy a second content cycle, Deadline notes.

Michaels offered him the Trump impression and let him host three times. That is not a casting call, that is penance. The show that fired him is now buying his failure as programming, and the failure is buying back the coverage.

YOUR TURN: When the bomb comes with "(again)" in the headline, at what point does the flop become the punchline?
