According to The Hollywood Reporter, Olivia Rodrigo confirmed in this week's cover story that she is single, and called being stalked on a casual date and judged for the photos "the craziest thing."

This summer she was caught on a few dates with a New York private equity associate, and the tabloids ran it as a story about the trendiness of dating finance bros, complete with Stan Twitter backlash. As THR notes, the man was not even her boyfriend. It was a date. The one-date engagement is now the setup for a magazine feature.

The confirmation did not come as a statement. It came as a glossy spread in the Oct. 7 issue, with a photographer, a stylist, a cover, and a $20 million charity festival to fill out the second half. Her relationship status is now a media placement, scheduled around the album and the tour. "I wish that I could be 23 years old and experience life normally," she says, in a spread about a 23-year-old who cannot get through a summer without a photographer. That is the most honest moment of the issue.

And she knows it. The stopped sentence is the tell. "I understand that that's sort of part of the ... you know what? No. It actually really sucks." One second from the PR-approved version, then she just went with the true one.

YOUR TURN: Does "I'm single" from a cover story count as an announcement or an apology?
