According to Variety, Spotify has removed 50 million AI slop tracks from recommendations this year, a figure published in the company's "For the Record" blog, which is the name Spotify gives to its press releases. The cleanup sits on top of 75 million tracks it says it pulled entirely as spam, so the scale of the mess is better described as a second catalog than a moderation problem.

The fine print is the whole story. The 50 million were not removed. They were demoted. The tracks still live in the library, but the algorithm will no longer volunteer them, which means a listener now has to seek out machine-slop the way you seek out the last slice of pizza at a party. Spotify's own post admits the pattern it found was simple: "A clear pattern emerged: these tracks were consistently ones identified as slop or spam." The company also revealed that AI-generated songs are ten times less likely to clear the 1,000-stream threshold for royalties, and that thousands of "AI Persona" profiles now carry labels, like an HR pin on a costume.

"As AI makes music more abundant, we believe listeners will value human artistry even more," the post said. Then: "Our job is to make Spotify the place they find it." That is what a janitorial service says after leaving the trash bags by the door. It is also, apparently, what every streamer is saying. YouTube Music and Apple Music added AI labels last week, and Tidal went further, refusing to pay royalties on AI music at all. The entire industry just discovered slop the moment slop started collecting checks.

YOUR TURN: A purge that is really a demotion. Which do you want to find the last of: the slop, or the playlist that recommends it?
