Quentin Tarantino confirmed on The Graham Norton Show that he has finished writing the script for his tenth film, but he won't make it until his new play closes and he 'lives a little,' according to Variety. It was his first appearance on the show in over a decade.

The tenth film is the most valuable thing Tarantino has never made. The retirement promise has been running as a franchise for more than twenty years: ten films, then he walks, and the tenth has always been the one about to arrive. Now he says the script is done. Good. So where is it? In a drawer, behind a play.

Because that's the punchline. His final film — the last word, the definitive work — is now in the queue behind a swashbuckling stage comedy starring Sacha Baron Cohen that opens next March. The masterwork has become a sequel to a play. That's not retirement. That's a prioritization list.

His plan, in his own words: do the play, 'see who I am,' then 'spend time with my family and live a little,' then 'see what I want to do.' Translation: the tenth film is in development indefinitely, which is the only status a Tarantino project has ever had. The script, we're told, is 'one that I really like.' We've heard that part before. It's the only part that's true.

The last movie he made was 2019. The tenth has survived a pandemic and one retirement that never happened. Some of us call that a draft.

YOUR TURN: When does a 'last film' become a job description?
